Small and medium businesses, wherever they are, benefit greatly from a larger network to provide support and resources – especially in an environment hostile to startups. In 2011, the India SME Forum was formed for the purpose of recognizing and supporting small and medium businesses, many struggling under what the organization calls “the non entrepreneur friendly policies of the government.” In five years, the SME Forum, which started with 400 members, has grown to include more than 76,000 MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises), with support from over 270 sectoral and regional associations and partnerships with 35 banks and corporations.
One way in which the India SME Forum recognizes the achievements of small businesses is through the “India’s Small Giants” award, an oxymoronic title that singles out organizations the forum believes have the potential to become actual giants in the future. This year’s award was given to 40 companies, chosen by a panel from a pool of over 1,600 nominees. One of those 40 was Bangalore’s Altem Technologies, a leading supplier of 3D technology to Southeast Asia. Founded in 2010, Altem Technologies serves as a distributor for several major 3D manufacturers including Stratasys, Dassault Systèmes, Artec 3D and more.

Altem also played a role in getting people excited about 3D printing in a country that, until recently, had been relatively slow to adopt the technology. Projects like the creation of a six-foot-tall 3D printed statue of the Hindu god Ganesha not only wowed people with the capabilities of 3D printing, but gained good publicity for the company and the technology they offer. Altem Technologies is also known for the development of printmyCAD.com, a service that allows customers to try out 3D printing technology by having their first 3D design printed and shipped to them for free.
The enthusiasm, creativity and customer service Altem brings to their business are certainly major factors in their success, and the Small Giants award isn’t the first time they’ve been recognized. They were honored with the “India SME 100” award, which recognizes the top 100 small and medium companies in the country, in 2014, and have also earned formal accolades from several of their partners.
“We are very proud to win this prestigious India Small Giants Award,” said Sharath Chandra, co-founder of Altem Technologies. “It is a testament to our team’s hard work and vision. Altem, since its inception, has been dedicated to creating awareness about 3D printing technologies in India, and help more people realize the benefits of this technology in India. This award emboldens us to continue to our work and take it new heights. We thank India SME Forum for recognizing our efforts with this award.”
It likely won’t be the last award they receive, either. The popularity of 3D printing has risen rapidly in India over the past couple of years, and Altem Technologies has been largely to thank for that. Let’s discuss this recent award over in the 3D Tech Company Altem Receives Award forum at 3DPB.com.
