If last year was the year in which we saw affordability introduced into the consumer 3D printing space via dozens of crowdfunding campaigns, 2015 is the year of the all-in-one hybrid 3D printers. At the tale end of last year, we watched as FLUX Technology raised a staggering $1.64 million on Kickstarter for an all-in-one 3D printer, scanner, and laser engraver. Scheduled to ship sometime in July, the FLUX machine will likely have decent competition.

Today a company based out of Pittsburgh, PA., and founded by two brothers, Justin and Joel Johnson, has launched a new Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in which they seek $50,000 to begin full-scale production of their BoXZY All-in-one 3D Printer, CNC mill and laser engraver.

Like the FLUX machine, seen last year, BoXZY allows for incredibly fast swapping of tool modules, referred to as ‘quick-change heads’. Whether you need to mill a piece of wood, plastic, brass, aluminum or one of several other compatible materials, or 3D print your next project, this machine can quickly and easily be put into action.  At the same time, this machine allows for finishing touches to be added to thin woods, plastics and leather within minutes, via the laser engraving module.

The machine itself is incredibly robust, built with a sturdy aluminum frame and hardened and stainless hardware. The accuracy of all three built-in manufacturing capabilities are enhanced by the ballscrew actuation system, providing resolution as high as 4 microns. Below you will find some of the key features of the BoXZY machine:

  • 3D Printing Material Compatibility: PLA, PVA, Ninja-flex, ABS, and Nylon (with added enclosure)
  • CNC Mill Speed: 10,000 to 30,000 RPM
  • Resolution: Up to 4 micron
  • Laser Power: 2000 mW laser, 445 nm laser
  • CNC Milling Capacity: 935 watt (1.25hp)

BoXZY is pretty much an entire MakerSpace in a box. Instead of being required to purchase three machines costing anywhere from $500 to $5000 a piece, one simple, robust machine can be purchased, freeing up cash and extra work space for the maker. In order to raise the necessary funding to begin production, the company is offering several pre-order options.

For a pledge of just $1,399, Early Bird backers can receive the BoXZY machine, along with the CNC Mill attachment. For just $1,599, Early Bird backers will get to choose any one of the three modular tool heads being offered. For pledges of $2,499, backers will receive the fully loaded model, with all three major swappable tool heads. There are also pricier options available which include a variety of additional goodies such as 3D printer filament, a full clamp/jig set, a BoXZY tool kit, and more.

If the company is able to reach their $50,000 funding goal on or before April 18th, they expect to begin shipping the very first BoXZY units by November of this year. Let us know if you have backed this project and what your initial thoughts are on the company. Discuss in the BoXZY forum thread on 3DPB.com.  Check out the Kickstarter pitch video below:
